How would you describe your day-to-day at Film Base Berlin?

A significant portion of the internship involved more routine and repetitive work, like sourcing and organizing clips for this experimental film that my boss is working on producing. But there were also opportunities that I was allowed to take on given my experience in production, like creating shoot schedules, reaching out to overseas production houses for co-production opportunities, etc.

The working environment was relatively relaxed and very different from the more structured and rigorous working environments I have experienced in Singapore. Mathias was particularly patient and understanding, and I felt comfortable asking questions whenever I did not understand something. He was also very willing to teach and share his knowledge, while being receptive to feedback and different perspectives.

The environment was relaxed and supportive, and I always felt comfortable asking questions and learning from Mathias.

Has your internship met your expectations?

I initially hoped to gain more hands-on production experience, and while some of the work was repetitive, I was grateful for the opportunities where I could take on greater responsibility, particularly during shoots. Those experiences helped me realize that I enjoy work that requires me to be adaptable, think on my feet and interact with different people. I especially enjoy being able to speak to people, learn about their experiences and understand the stories behind them.

The most enjoyable part of my internship was the time I was given the opportunity to be a Lead Production Assistant on set a documentary shot in Berlin. It was my first time being a part of a foreign production (given that the directors were American as well), and also my first time in a lead role on set. It was a pleasant shoot experience, working with experienced professionals, and being entrusted to more responsibilities on set gave me a sense of ownership to the role I had and ultimately also allowed me that sense of accomplishment once the shoot finished smoothly.

In terms of my long-term career, I think this experience will help me look beyond simply finding a job within media or production. It has shown me that I want a career that combines creativity with people, where I can meet different individuals, understand their perspectives and turn those experiences into meaningful work. The internship also taught me to be more intentional about the opportunities I pursue and to recognize the environments where I am most able to learn, contribute and grow.

In what way did ArtBound Initiative helped you the most?

I would say ArtBound Initiative helped me most by giving me a support system that extended beyond the internship itself. Moving overseas and living independently for three months was a very different experience from simply going abroad for a short trip, and ABI provided practical resources that made that transition much easier.

At the same time, I found the career development support particularly valuable. The resume and portfolio consultations encouraged me to think more intentionally about my personal brand, not just in terms of how I could market myself to employers, but in terms of understanding who I am, what I bring to the table and how I want to present myself professionally.

Beyond the formal resources, I also appreciated having people I could reach out to when I needed guidance. ABI gave me the space and support to navigate both the professional and personal sides of living overseas, and ultimately helped me become more confident and independent.

ArtBound Initiative gave me a support system beyond the internship, helping me navigate living overseas while becoming more confident, independent, and intentional about my career.
