WHO IS RESPONSIBLE
FOR PARTICIPANTS WHILE THEY ARE ABROAD?

Every effort is made by ABI administrators to ensure participants are safe and healthy while living abroad. We provide comprehensive information prior to and during the experience. Prior to departure, each individual receives an Emergency Information Card with contact information of personnel at destination. All locations of the program are considered safe. We make every effort to prepare participants and inform them of health and safety information. It is the responsibility of the participant to comply with guidelines.

WHILE PARTICIPANTS ARE ABROAD, WHAT SHOULD THEY DO IF THERE ARE QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS?

Staff members are only an email or phone call away. We assist participants during the entire time they are overseas. All contacts information of our staff will be provided to participants and their parents. Additionally, there is a 24/7 emergency phone number if issues arise while overseas. We will provide this number to each participant during the full in city orientation we conduct upon arrival of the participant.

HEALTH & SAFETY

ARTBOUND INITIATIVE recognizes that our responsibility is to ensure that programs are designed and operated with the health and safety of participants as the highest priority. We understand that being overseas can involve some levels of risk. We work to identify and reduce the risks while providing the exceptional opportunities associated to interning abroad. Following are some of the ways which help to manage risk, prepare participants ahead of the trip and respond if problems occur.

  • We carefully choose program locations and screen overseas partners. Programs are only available in locations where there are no active travel warnings issued by the US Department of State.

  • Each participant is required to complete a Student Health Questionnaire to be reviewed by a staff member and to disclose any health conditions which may impact their time abroad. Any need for prescription medications or physical or psychological ailments should be noted. Some prescriptions and/or treatments are not available internationally. The staff member may follow up with a phone call if there are questions or concerns revealed on the questionnaire.

  • Participants will undergo a pre-departure orientation, as well as an on-site orientation to prepare them for any safety or health problems which may arise. Pre-departure orientation includes information about health and safety issues. Each participant receives a wallet-sized Emergency Information Card with contact information of in-country assistance individuals.

  • On-site Orientation is required of all participants. The session will highlight local health and safety information. Participants are provided with information about how to work with the ARTBOUND INITIATIVE team in the event of an emergency or other incidents. The on-site orientations are led by Site Directors and/or overseas partners.

  • Participants carry international medical and accident insurance coverage. The insurance is included in each program. Participants are covered for accidents or illness while enrolled in the program. The insurance includes a 24/7 hotline for emergencies

INSURANCE

As part of the pre-departure orientation, participants will be informed of all issues relating to medical care, immunizations and insurance. ARTBOUND INITIATIVE should be notified of any pre-existing health conditions which may affect the participant during the time overseas. This notification should be done well before departure. Health conditions will not impact admission to any of the programs, but will permit the host institution and ARTBOUND INITIATIVE to make the necessary accommodations prior to departure.

Medical treatment overseas is not an expected requirement, but adequate coverage is available if the need arises. The cost of accident and medical coverage, irrespective of the program location is included in the fee.

Comprehensive insurance coverage for all participants is provided. The coverage levels were set in conjunction with Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI)  and includes the following maximum benefits:

  • Accidental Death: $50,000

  • Basic Medical: $250,000

  • Emergency Medical Reunion: $2,500

  • Medical Evacuation/Repatriation: $50,000 (in addition to medical maximum).
