Olivia's Story: Photography Internship in New York

Meet Olivia!

Olivia is currently completing her MFA in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts in London. With a deep passion for visual storytelling and editorial work, she joined the ArtBound Initiative program and completed an international photography internship at Office Magazine in New York, a publication known for its bold approach to art, fashion, culture, and photography.

Read more about her experience below.

How would you describe your day-to-day at Office Magazine?

No two days were the same for me! Although I was placed as a Photography Intern, I was lucky enough to work on many different things throughout my time there. Some days I was helping with online articles or social media content. Other days, I was supporting shoots or jumping into whatever tasks were needed.

My favorite days were definitely the shoot days by being part of a team, seeing a concept come to life and holding the final product in front of you. It was incredibly rewarding! I really felt like an all-around creative assistant, helping wherever I could.

Here’s what Olivia worked on during her internship:

  • Assist on photo shoots, including setup, lighting, and breakdown.

  • Conduct photo research and maintain the magazine's photo archives.

  • Capture photography for editorial and social media content.

  • Help with administrative tasks such as organizing files and managing photography equipment.

  • Support in photo shoot production, including coordinating models, styling, and logistics.

How do you think this internship will impact your career?

To begin with, this internship fulfilled my dream of being in New York, working for a magazine and being involved in projects that were so fun and exciting. I’m really grateful for the chance to be part of creative work and to see it come to life, which is something that will never get old.

I’d gladly say that I’ve walked away with not only new skills under my belt, but also opportunities that have been incredible to take part in.

This internship has also introduced me to more production assisting roles, which opened doors to new creative paths I hadn’t considered before. I gained relationships, contacts, and opportunities in both New York and London. Even more, I now understand the behind-the-scenes of editorial production in a way I never had access to before.

In what way did ArtBound Initiative helped you the most?

The guidance from the team, the speakers, and the industry pros was amazing! Everyone who took the time to talk to us, teach us, or meet with us made a huge difference. The speakers were incredibly insightful, and their help with adjusting my portfolio and CV to better fit my industry was invaluable.

ABI really did a great job at building a strong community where I interned, and I’ve made wonderful friendships that I know will last a lifetime.
