Esther's Story: Production Internship in New York

This is Esther!

Esther is a Denison University student earning a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Music with a

minor in Computer Science. She was seeking an internship in Film or TV Production when she discovered the ArtBound Initiative program. With her skills in music, she got to intern with Notes for Notes in NYC. Read more below!

Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern for Notes for Notes?

Depending on which studio I am going to, my daily routine changes a bit, usually if it isn’t for teen nights I will head in at around 1:00 and when I get to the studio I’ll help the producer set everything up, turn on the lights, and the TV. Then we will work on some beats for a while until my producer goes to bring in our first group. Usually we will work with a group of around three to six kids for 30-60 minutes until around 4:30-5:00. Then we will work with teens for the next hour to hour and a half. Usually after the teens are dismissed, we will shut everything down and log everyone who came into the studio. If I am working a teen night, usually I will go in a little bit later and just help out where I’m needed; whether it be playing music with the teens, recording or creating some music, or filming some videos for them.

What was your favorite part about your internship?

I really enjoyed being able to work in a music studio environment, as well as helping teens create music. I find it really fulfilling to see all the kids so excited about music and the songs they’ve created. I have also been introduced to the music software program Ableton which I feel will be really useful.

Did your internship meet your expectations and how will it impact your career goals?

While I was expecting to achieve some different goals, I still feel like this internship met my expectations, just not how I expected. I feel like I gained a lot of digital music production experience, as well as some recording and producing experience!

How would you describe the way ArtBound Initiative helped you the most?

I struggle with taking the first step a lot of the times, so I feel like ArtBound was a good way for me to feel prepared for this internship and the process of applying for internships. I also feel like ArtBound helped me prepare for my interviews well.
