Elijah's Story: Sound Design Internship in Chicago

This is Elijah!

UIUC Sound Design & Tech student, Elijah, was aiming for an internship either in the entertainment or media industry. Later, he discovered about ArtBound Initiative and decided to join the program, leading him to a role as a Sound Design Intern for ARU Chicago. Read how Elijah's internship got him some practical experience in the music industry.

Could you describe what your day-to-day looks like as an intern ARU?

During my time at ARU, I've been given a variety of tasks and assignments. These included making copies, running grocery errands for clients, and completing other subtasks that my supervisor might have given me. Some days I would also observe multiple client sessions that involved editing, mixing, and designing, whether remote or digital.

Whenever one of the studios were open, I would have the wonderful opportunity to complete two independent projects in Pro Tools using ARU's specific template. Both projects involved sound replacement and editing for two of ARU's archived TV spots: a Craftsman commercial and a Hotel.com commercial.

What was your favorite part about your internship?

My favorite part of the internship was working on my independent projects, which greatly improved my proficiency in Pro Tools, as well as my skills in mixing and editing. I also found it rewarding to build relationships with clients, even within a short period of time.

How would you describe the way ArtBound Initiative helped you the most?

I admired how ArtBound Initiative was there for me every step of the way throughout my internship process. If I had a question or comment regarding my internship, my program coordinator was always there for support.

Building relationships with clients, even in a brief timeframe, was something rewarding for me.
