3 Tips to Secure Your Dream Job

Many of us have always dreamed of working at that one place whether it be the Metropolitan Museum of Art, being represented by your favorite gallery or working for a big name creative agency. But why should you let your career goals remain a dream?

We suggest these tips for securing your dream job!

1. REACH OUT TO YOUR CONTACTS

Only 20% of the jobs are published online (NPR). 80% of opportunities get filled up through referrals and in-house promotions. Who you know matters, so networking is the first place to start!

  • Set up coffee meetings or short calls with them

  • Get to learn more about the places they work for, their personal path, and how they got started.

  • Once you feel comfortable, ask for a referral or suggestions on where you should be looking.

  • Don’t forget, this will take some time, get started early!

2. CONNECT WITH YOUR DREAM COMPANY

Sometimes it's hard to see yourself working anywhere except for that one place you've always dreamed of. In that case, we suggest asserting your presence early on in your job search by doing these key things:

  • Do you or your close friends know anyone at the organization? If so, reach out, ask them about it and try to set up an informal interview.

  • Check LinkedIn - do YOU already know someone working there? If so, reach out.

  • Even if you don’t, see if you can set up an informational interview.

  • Ask to volunteer! Get to know them so when they hire, they’ll think of you.

3. DON'T FORGET ABOUT JOB BOARDS

Continue applying to jobs online. Here are a number of sites to get you started:

Also, be sure to check out some of our industry specific blog posts for more detailed information on job boards and cultural resources.

BOTTOM LINE

Don't be discouraged! On average, you may have to send out around 28 applications before getting a job offer. Keep applying and networking!
